burning and being macho
Some of the guys at my High School put out cigarettes or cigars in their arms. It's not uncommon to see pink round welts on their arms. While I couldn't tell you their reasons behind it, it seems to be some sort of expression of masculinity. They're proud of it.

Would you consider this sort of behavior to be self-injury, since the reasons behind it seem to be less emotional and more societal?

i think it is self-injury. society tells them to be masculine but no one ever said that causing physical harm to yourself is masculine. why not lift weights or fix cars or do other "manly" things?
i have a good friend who does or used to do things like that. and it would all be so random. sometimes he found it entertaining, but sometimes he also got depressed so it was hard for me to understand it. but i don't think its societal.
